Puppy temperament testing is a great way to match the right puppy to the right owner. Whether you are a breeder, rescuer or wish to pick a puppy from a litter, temperament testing can help you in determining what puppy is best for you or your buyers/adopters. Not every dog works in every household. A very high drive, energetic dog may not be best for the family that is gone at work all day. An easy going puppy is probably best suited for a first time owner.
The Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test (PAT) is a widely used Puppy Temperament Testing System that can be done on puppies at the age of 7 weeks of age. This is a system of tests, each scored separately with the purpose to find the right puppy for the right home. It is based on a variety of criteria and tests certain canine drives such as the prey drive, pack drive, defense fight or flight drives. The test also helps determine a puppy's degree of response to touch, sight, sound, and startle as well as its willingness to accept people and/or submit to a situation in which it has no control. It is imperative that the test be given by an unfamiliar person to the puppies and away from their litter mates.
